Solution-Focused Therapy

Clarify Your Goals. Build on Your Strengths. Create Change That Matters.

Are you feeling overwhelmed but not sure where to start? Do you want therapy that’s practical, focused, and centered on what’s working instead of what’s wrong? Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT) offers a hopeful, collaborative path forward by helping you tap into your own strengths, resources, and vision for change.

At Four Wings Psychology, we provide Solution-Focused Therapy in Nepean and virtually across Ontario. Whether you’re navigating life transitions, mental health challenges, or feeling stuck, our therapists use SFT to help you move forward with clarity and confidence.

What Is Solution-Focused Therapy?

Solution-Focused Therapy (also known as Solution-Focused Brief Therapy or SFBT) is a short-term, goal-oriented approach that emphasizes solutions rather than problems. Instead of digging deeply into what’s gone wrong, SFT focuses on what’s going right and how to do more of it.

It’s based on the idea that:

  • You already have strengths and strategies that can help you move forward
  • Small changes can lead to big results
  • You don’t have to fully understand a problem to start creating solutions

SFT helps you:

  • Define specific, meaningful goals
  • Identify exceptions to the problem (times it’s better or absent)
  • Explore your internal and external resources
  • Build confidence in your ability to create change
  • Take practical steps, at your own pace, toward what matters most

What Can Solution-Focused Therapy Help With?

SFT is adaptable and effective for a wide range of concerns, especially when you’re looking for brief, strengths-based support. It’s often used alone or as part of an integrated approach to therapy.

Solution-Focused Therapy can help with:

  • Anxiety or stress
  • Depression or low mood
  • Life transitions or decision-making
  • Relationship or communication challenges
  • Career, school, or motivation issues
  • Parenting and family dynamics
  • Confidence, self-esteem, and identity work
  • Clarifying direction when you feel stuck or unsure

Whether you need one session or a short-term series, SFT is designed to be efficient, empowering, and goal-oriented.

What to Expect in Solution-Focused Therapy at Four Wings

In SFT, you and your therapist will work together to quickly identify your goals and build on the strengths you already have, even if they feel hard to acknowledge right now.

In sessions, you may:

  • Clarify what you want to be different in specific, concrete terms
  • Explore times when the issue was less severe or absent
  • Reflect on skills, strategies, and supports you’ve already used successfully
  • Create a plan of small, achievable next steps
  • Practice noticing progress and celebrating what’s working

Therapy can be brief (sometimes just 3–6 sessions) or integrated into ongoing work with other approaches, depending on your needs.
