Providing Compassionate Support to Help You Cope With Loss

Grief is a unique and individual experience, with everyone moving through it at a different pace and in a different way. Whether you're coping with the loss of a loved one, grieving the end of a relationship, or facing a life change that has turned your world upside down, your pain is real.

At Four Wings Psychology, we offer grief counselling in the greater Ottawa area and online across Ontario. Our team can help you to move through the changes, questions, and feelings that come with loss.

What Is Grief?

Grief can look different for different people and contexts. You might feel sad, angry, numb, or even some relief. You may also feel some or all of these things at once. Other signs of grief you might notice include:

  • Difficulty sleeping or changes in your appetite
  • Trouble concentrating or staying in the present moment
  • Feeling tired or in physical pain
  • Pulling away from others or feeling disconnected
  • Thoughts of “what now” or a change in your sense of identity

We often think of grief as coming on with the loss of a loved one, but it can also come up with:

  • The loss of a pet
  • Divorce or separation
  • Miscarriage or infertility
  • Job loss or retirement (including medical retirement)
  • You or a loved one being diagnosed with a serious medical condition

However your grief presents itself, what you're feeling is valid. Know that it can feel better.

How Grief Counselling Helps

Grief therapy gives you a compassionate and safe place to explore your feelings, find meaning, and reconnect with your life in ways that honour the loss you've had.

At Four Wings Psychology, our team has a variety of approaches available to help tailor approaches that work to your unique experience. These include:

  • Narrative Therapy which helps you to look at your own story and examine how the loss you have experienced may have affected your identity
  • Emotion-Focused Therapy which is designed to help you process intense emotions such as guilt, anger or regret
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy which can help support you while you learn to live with your loss and reconnect with the things and people that matter
  • Mindfulness and Grounding Techniques to help you stay in the present moment and better manage overwhelming waves of emotions

The goal of therapy isn't to fix your grief but to instead support you as you move through healing at your own pace.
