At Four Wings Psychology, we provide services to couples in the Ottawa area, as well as virtual services for couples across Ontario. Our couples therapists offer an environment where each member of the couple feels heard and not judged, and where you can feel supported as a unit. We strive to help you and your partner navigate challenges and changes that have come up, and strengthen your bond as a team.

What is Couples Therapy?

Couples therapy is a type of psychotherapy that is collaborative, where each member of a couple can explore their feelings about and within the relationship, as well as the patterns that come up, all with the help of a therapist trained in this work. Our therapists are not here to pick sides or assign blame to one person over another - we're here to identify the patterns that keep you stuck and help you build new way to communicate with one another, connect, and support each other.

We provide support to many types of relationships, including:

  • Married or unmarried couples
  • LGBTQ2S+ couples
  • Couples in relationships that are new, on-again/off-again, or long-term
  • Couples that are in crisis, need to reconnect or in a transitional period

What Can Couples Therapy Help With?

Couples Therapy can help you and your partner through a number of different challenges, including:

  • Communication breakdowns or increasing conflict
  • Loneliness, resentment, or feeling emotionally distant from one another
  • Jelaousy, infidelity, or difficulty trusting one another

What to Expect in Couples Therapy at Four Wings.

Although our clinicians use several different approaches in their work with couples, these are all grounded in attachment research, emotion-focused work, and a deep appreciation and respect for each partner's experience. Sessions are tailored to meet your needs best, allowing us to create a space that feels more comfortable to be vulnerable and where growth feels possible.

In couples therapy, you may:

  • Identify and learn to notice negative cycles in your relationship
  • Practice slowing down and listening to your partner empathically
  • Learn tools to help you better express your needs and work through conflict - together
  • Build up emotional safety and be able to better trust each other
  • Reduce defensiveness and instead explore differences with a sense of curiosity
  • Learn to be better able to turn towards each other in difficult times, rather than away

Our therapists are trained to help you look at what's under the conflict, which is often fear, hurt, or needs that have not been met. We'll help you to respond with less reactivity and instead with more care and compassion.
