Narrative Therapy

Reclaim Your Story and Redefine Your Relationship With Struggles

Do you ever feel like your life is defined by your challenges with anxiety, trauma, depression, or self-doubt? Like your identity has been reduced to only a single chapter, when there’s so much more to who you are?

Narrative Therapy helps you separate your identity from your struggles and reconnect with the values, strengths, and possibilities that have always been a part of your story.

At Four Wings Psychology, we offer Narrative Therapy in Nepean and virtually across Ontario. This collaborative, empowering approach supports clients in re-authoring their lives with more agency, meaning, and connection, especially when past experiences or labels have overshadowed their sense of self.

What Is Narrative Therapy?

Narrative Therapy is a respectful, non-pathologizing form of talk therapy that views people as the authors of their lives, not defined by the problems they face. It focuses on how we make meaning through stories, and how dominant narratives (from family, society, trauma, or culture) can shape how we see ourselves.

Narrative Therapy helps you:

  • Separate yourself from the problem (“You are not your depression”)
  • Identify unhelpful or limiting life stories
  • Explore hidden strengths, values, and skills within your experiences
  • Re-author stories that reflect resilience, purpose, and self-worth
  • Shift identity from “what’s wrong with me” to “what matters to me”

It’s a therapy rooted in curiosity, dignity, and your own wisdom, not diagnoses or labels.

What Can Narrative Therapy Help With?

Narrative Therapy is well-suited for individuals who feel defined by problems or diagnoses, or who are exploring their identity, life direction, or the impact of their history.

It can be especially helpful for:

  • Anxiety, depression, or self-doubt that feels like part of your identity
  • Trauma, grief, or relational wounds that have shaped how you see yourself
  • Life transitions or identity exploration (e.g., career, culture, sexuality)
  • Chronic illness, disability, or caregiving roles
  • Cultural, gender, or systemic narratives that have been internalized
  • Feeling “stuck” in old patterns or limited versions of yourself

This approach is collaborative. Your therapist is not the expert on your life: you are.

What to Expect in Narrative Therapy at Four Wings

Narrative Therapy is a conversational, story-based approach where you and your therapist explore your experiences through new lenses in a gentle and respectful way.

In Narrative Therapy sessions, you may:

  • Explore how dominant narratives were formed (e.g., from family, school, culture)
  • Identify “problem-saturated stories” and how they’ve influenced your self-view
  • Name values, dreams, and personal truths that have been overlooked
  • Develop “alternative stories” rooted in agency, resilience, and hope
  • Externalize the problem (e.g., “the anxiety” instead of “my anxiety”)
  • Reconnect with your own voice, purpose, and preferred identity

Your therapist will follow your lead, asking questions that invite insight, not judgment.

Why Choose Four Wings Psychology for Narrative Therapy?

  • Therapists trained in Narrative Therapy and postmodern, collaborative models
  • Deep respect for your lived experience, identity, and cultural background
  • LGBTQ2S+ affirming, anti-oppressive, and trauma-informed practice

You are not your problem. Let’s explore the fuller story: together.
